Therapy for Actors, Writers, & Creatives

Do you love your craft but find the business sucks for your mental health?

I’ve been there.

Rejection. Ghosting. Irregular hours. Dry spells. Financial insecurity. Toxic personalities. Ageism, racism, sexism. And all sorts of other things outside your control.

These are just a few of the difficulties performing artists, writers, and entertainment professionals encounter. It’s no wonder anxiety, trauma, depression, rage, and relationship problems are common experiences.

Maybe you just lost a job you were sure was yours, feel exhausted by the chronic uncertainty, or can’t stop comparing yourself to others and feeling like you come up short.

You’re not alone.

As an artist or creative, you may notice that:

  • You feel a lot of self-doubt and anxiety about your own talent and competence. You may be terrified that others will discover you’re an imposter or fraud. You may also be struggling to stay motivated, confident, and creative.

  • It’s getting harder to bounce back from rejection, and you find yourself feeling avoidant or depressed.

  • Your personal life is at a standstill: you don’t want anyone to derail you, fear others won’t accept your career, or have no bandwidth left for deeper connections.

  • You have questions about your identity: are you worthy if you’re not working, if you make money through other jobs, if your contract doesn’t get renewed?

  • You feel stressed out by all the pressure, don’t sleep well, worry constantly, and may be leaning on substances more than you’d like.

  • You’re stretched thin, but it’s hard to say no. What if you pass up a great opportunity?

  • You experience things like jealousy, existential angst, and self-doubt on almost a daily basis. You try to push these feelings away, but they keep coming back.

  • You’re scared to admit it when you’ve sunk so much in, but sometimes you’re not sure this is still the career or show for you.

  • You don’t feel quite the same about yourself, others, or your craft after experiencing an intensely stressful work situation or after a series of career disappointments.

It’s time to figure out a healthy way to do this.

Therapy can help you do several things:

  • Take back control of your life and cope better with the ups and downs

  • Work through creative blocks, performance anxiety, imposter syndrome, procrastination, and identity issues

  • Set healthy boundaries that work for you

  • Increase balance, perspective, and calm in your day to day

  • Heal from betrayals, deep disappointments, painful criticisms, and other wounds impacting your motivation, confidence, and performance

  • Improve your personal and professional relationships, and especially your relationship with yourself

  • Identify and move toward your personal values, so you don’t just live by Hollywood’s

  • Consider additional ways to use your talent and get your needs met if you feel unfulfilled

I’ll tailor each step to your unique needs and circumstances.

Work with someone who gets it.

Unlike most therapists, I actually know what you’re talking about when you refer to the intense pressure in the writers’ room, that sinking feeling comparing yourself to the competition, or the difficulty getting over that life-changing project that almost was.

I get how important it is for you to have a truly safe and confidential place to process, heal, and say it like it is. And how much you need a therapist who is neither intimidated by big achievements nor judgmental of your difficulties.

An actor before becoming a therapist, I have conducted research on the impact of film and TV work on mental health and presented to Writers Guild members on the topic of self-care. My clients include professional writers, actors, directors, musicians, execs, and other creatives working across the entertainment industry.

My approach to working with actors, writers, filmmakers and other performing and creative artists comes from the belief you are already whole, though the industry can make you feel broken.

Did something or someone steal your joy of performing or dent your confidence?

You may want to consider a therapy intensive, or concentrated 3-hour session targeting a specific creative or performance block.
